Thomas began writing her book in 2012, inspired by a police shooting in California where the victim, like Khalil, was African American and unarmed, and the officer was white. This tragedy led her to examine whose voices dominate such narratives, what details are emphasized or omitted, and who benefits or suffers from these portrayals. Starr, the protagonist, finds a way to challenge this cycle of hate by observing and bearing witness. Her friend Kenya, aware of Starr’s role as a witness, confronts her for not publicly defending Khalil, pushing Starr to speak out. She addresses a grand jury and a TV audience, questioning the justification for Khalil’s death and challenging stereotypes about him. Despite her efforts, the officer is not indicted, sparking protests in Garden Heights, where Starr continues to advocate for Khalil. The story ends with Starr embracing both mourning and activism as tools to combat systemic injustice, emphasizing the importance of remembering and fighting for change.
