Sethe, a previous captive, is grappling with the wounds of her past. After her plantation is taken over by a cruel new overseer named Schoolteacher, she escapes with her offspring to the northern states where enslavement is outlawed. Pursued by Schoolteacher, Sethe ends one of her children's life in order to shield her from a future of abuse. Following her release with the help of abolitionists, the appearance of a mysterious young lady known as Beloved at her residence changes everything. Thinking that Beloved is the spirit of her deceased child, Sethe dedicates all her time to atoning for her actions – despite Beloved's increasingly demanding and bitter behavior. While the local community aids in driving Beloved away, Sethe is past the point of no return. Worn-out and shattered, she resigns to her bed, ready to depart from this world.
