Following Muhammad's relocation, the tribes of Mecca and Medina engaged in a series of battles without a clear victor. To resolve the conflict, Muhammad proposed a peaceful pilgrimage to Mecca, leading unarmed followers to mend relations with the city. Bound by their laws protecting pilgrims, the Meccans hesitated to act, resulting in a ten-year truce and an agreement allowing Muhammad to return the following year for another pilgrimage. This pivotal event offered tribes the choice to align with Muhammad or the Quraysh, marking a turning point in his mission to unite the region under Islam. However, full unification required one final confrontation. Over the next year, Muhammad’s following grew, and he seized an opportunity when a Bedouin tribe allied with Mecca clashed with one supported by Medina. On January 11, 630, Muhammad led a decisive and minimally resisted attack on Mecca, securing the city and solidifying his leadership of the Islamic movement.
