Meanwhile, the DNC hired Fusion GPS to investigate Trump’s ties to Russia, leading to the Steele dossier, which alleged the Russian government possessed compromising material on Trump. This raised concerns about potential manipulation by Russia. Trump’s campaign faced scrutiny for its Russian connections, particularly figures like Paul Manafort, Carter Page, and George Papadopoulos, all of whom had ties to Russian interests. On October 7, 2016, news of Russian election interference was overshadowed by Hurricane Matthew, the Access Hollywood tape, and Wikileaks’ release of John Podesta’s emails. Despite these controversies, Trump remained focused on the election, while Clinton’s campaign suffered a blow when the FBI reopened her email investigation just days before the vote. Trump’s victory on November 8, 2016, shocked many, with questions lingering about Russian influence. Investigations continued, and in January 2017, Buzzfeed published the Steele dossier, further fueling public interest in Russia’s role. As Trump took office, unresolved concerns about foreign interference and strained U.S.-Russia relations persisted, reflecting a modern Cold War dynamic driven by cyberattacks and disinformation campaigns.
