Red teaming offers invaluable insights by identifying vulnerabilities and challenging conventional thinking, yet its impact often goes unrecognized or unutilized. From the CIA’s intelligence missteps to the military’s resistance to red team recommendations, such as the overlooked advice to transition Afghan farmers to quinoa, the effectiveness of these teams depends on decision-makers heeding their input. Red teams have also exposed critical security flaws, like undetected mock bombs in airports, but their warnings are not always acted upon, as seen before 9/11. When their advice is implemented, however, as in the case of preventing missile threats at JFK Airport, the results can be transformative. In the private sector, red teams and ethical hackers reveal weaknesses in both physical and digital security, as demonstrated by breaches like the 2013 Target hack. Despite their potential, red teams face challenges in adapting to the ever-changing landscape of cybersecurity, leaving their future both promising and uncertain.
