Résumé du livre
Maxwell Maltz (1889–1975) was an American cosmetic surgeon. In addition to the bestselling Psycho-Cybernetics, he wrote an autobiography, numerous self-help books, a novel and a play.
When an individual experiences a physical injury, their body creates a scar in order to shield the affected area. This way, scar tissue serves as a natural defense mechanism against further harm in the same spot.
Likewise, individuals often develop emotional scars to protect themselves from being hurt. Yet, these emotional scars not only shield you from the person who caused the pain initially but also act as a barrier between you and others. They essentially construct an emotional barrier that blocks out both friends and foes.
However, there is a way to overcome this by giving yourself an emotional makeover. This process is akin to performing emotional surgery, where forgiveness serves as your primary instrument instead of a scalpel.
Just as a sharp surgical tool can remove old wounds, genuine forgiveness can eliminate past hurts, allowing healing to take place. But in order to truly forgive, you must let go of the feeling of being wronged and even forget that you forgave in the first place.
Once you have shed your emotional scars, you can liberate your authentic self that lies within you. Many individuals have constrained personalities that hinder them from unleashing their creative abilities and expressing their true selves.
For example, stuttering is often a result of inhibition. This speech impediment arises from an excessive self-monitoring tendency that generates negative feedback.
This serves as a great illustration of how fixating on others' opinions and desires can inhibit you.
To move past this hindrance, it is vital to practice disinhibition. Interestingly, while people often emphasize the importance of thinking before speaking, the opposite approach is necessary. By speaking before thinking, you can eliminate self-conscious thoughts like questioning your actions. This is the initial step towards unlocking your creative persona.
