Cas Mudde is a Dutch political scientist and Stanley Wade Shelton UGAF Professor at the University of Georgia. He is also the cofounder of the European Consortium for Political Research’s Standing Group on Extremism & Democracy. Other titles he’s authored include Populist Radical Right Parties in Europe and Racist Extremism in Central and Eastern Europe.

Populism, a political ideology dividing society into "the people" and "the elite," has gained prominence in recent years but is often misunderstood. Leaders like Donald Trump and Evo Morales exemplify populism's reliance on personalistic leadership, with Trump leveraging charisma and outsider rhetoric, while Morales combined grassroots movements with a strong political party. Populist movements vary ideologically, as seen in the inclusive left-wing Occupy Wall Street and the exclusive right-wing Tea Party, both emerging after the Great Recession. In Europe, similar dynamics arose, with Greece's Syriza targeting economic elites like the IMF. Populism thrives on disillusionment with traditional parties and media amplification, as shown by Finland's True Finns. To counter populism, establishment parties must address their failures transparently and engage with public concerns.
