Résumé du livre
Octavia E. Butler was the Hugo and Nebula award-winning author of a wide range of near- and far-future science fiction novels. In 1995 she won the PEN Lifetime Achievement Award. Her books, including The Xenogenesis Trilogy and the Parable Series, explore everything from racial injustice to feminism to the impact of climate change. She died in 2006 at the age of 58. Since then, her works have only gained in popularity due in part to the increasing relevance of their subject matter.
Change is the most potent and influential power in the world. Our only chance is to guide it when possible and adapt to it when necessary. Lauren’s journey towards the north and into adulthood demonstrates her evolving understanding of this idea.
At first, she focuses solely on survival techniques. When circumstances push her to leave her home prematurely, she travels with familiar companions. Surviving becomes her main concern. However, as she observes and absorbs the lessons of life on the road, she starts to recognize the human aspect of it, as well as the significance of fostering a sense of community. As they progress towards the north, Lauren and her group gradually develop, learning to collaborate even in times of disagreement, placing the well-being of the vulnerable as a priority.
Lauren discovers unexpected love and camaraderie with these unfamiliar individuals, to the extent that she is able to introduce the foundations of her new faith to them. The community they establish may not be entirely secure, but it serves as a beacon of hope.
