Daraa, a once-thriving agricultural hub in southwest Syria, faced devastation when a severe drought in 2007 forced farmers to abandon their lands, setting the stage for unrest that culminated in the 2011 Syrian Civil War. Amid this turmoil, Doaa Al Zamel grew up in a hopeful yet increasingly disillusioned Syria under Bashar al-Assad's rule. The Arab Spring, sparked by Mohamed Bouazizi's self-immolation, reached Daraa, where protests erupted, including the tragic “Great Friday” massacre that deeply impacted Doaa. By 2012, her family fled to Egypt, where Doaa met Bassem, and together they dreamed of a safer life in Europe. Their perilous journey across the Mediterranean ended in tragedy, with only eleven survivors out of 500 passengers. Despite immense loss, including Bassem’s death, Doaa’s resilience shone as she saved two infants, Masa and Malak, during four harrowing days at sea. Rescued and later settling in Sweden, Doaa became a symbol of hope and courage, honored for her bravery and shedding light on the plight and potential of refugees.
