Many of us tend to get stuck in a single mode, but that's not enough. The key to being fully present in every part of your life is understanding the 5 Gears and knowing when to use each one. From the focused and intense fifth gear, to multitasking in fourth gear, socializing in third gear, connecting with loved ones in second gear, or taking time for yourself in first gear - each gear has its own appropriate time and place. There's even a reverse gear! By recognizing which gears we tend to rely on and which ones we shy away from, we can start applying the right one to each situation throughout our day, ultimately enabling us to be fully present at all times.
Use the 5 Gears terminology at home or in the office.
By introducing the language of the 5 Gears into your home or workplace, you can effectively communicate when someone is operating in a gear that doesn't match the situation's requirements. For instance, if a coworker continues discussing work matters during lunch, you can politely suggest they shift to third gear. Similarly, if your child seeks your attention while you're deeply focused in fifth gear, a simple hand gesture, like flashing five fingers, conveys the message without causing offense. It's not a personal criticism but rather a way of indicating the need to adapt to the appropriate gear for the moment.
"People are attracted to confident people, and there is a direct correlation between confidence and respectful curiosity."
"If in your busyness you treat people as if they are not as important as your work, then you lose respect over time and gain a reputation for being unapproachable."
"In the new world the capacity to establish, develop, and maintain key relationships both inside and outside your organization is going to become the primary currency of leadership influence."
