Beverly Gage

J. Edgar Hoover was without a doubt one of the most influential leaders in shaping the United States as we know it today. In hindsight, it is clear that much of what he despised in others stemmed from his own self-hatred. From physical frailty to his own homosexuality and harshness, Hoover condemned them all while embodying them himself. During his childhood, he was small in stature and his father suffered from depression. Despite this, he upheld and promoted the masculine standards of athleticism and strength. As he matured, he pursued power while also trying to win the favor of those in power. He fought against injustice even as he committed injustices. These contradictions between his true self and his public image influenced his approach to crime, politics, and government. He experienced and participated in events such as the Palmer Raids, Japanese internment, McCarthyism, and the assassinations of Kennedy and King. Whether for better or worse, Hoover’s legacy is now firmly established.
