Professor Sarah Gilbert is Saïd Professor of Vaccinology at the University of Oxford and the co-founder of Vaccitech, a biotechnology company which develops vaccines and immunotherapies. Professor Gilbert specializes in developing vaccines for various viruses, including influenza, and co-developed the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine. This is her first book.

The first COVID-19 vaccines were designed and produced in just over two months, leading up to efficacy trials taking an additional seven months. The ChAdOx1 platform was utilized, previously used in influenza and MERS vaccines, aiding in early dosing testing. Scientists at the CBF and the University of Oxford’s CCVTM proceeded cautiously due to the novel virus's uncertainties. Rigorous testing ensured safety and efficacy before public release, completing animal trials successfully before human dosing. Phase I trials started with 1000 volunteers, focusing on safe immune response induction in adults under 55. Phase II expanded to include older adults without preexisting conditions, leading to Phase III trials open to all adults. Two doses twelve weeks apart showed the highest efficacy levels, reducing infection, transmission, and symptoms. Approval of the AZD1222 vaccine by the UK’s MHRA on December 30th, 2020, led to the first dose administered on January 4th, 2021.
