Deo’s journey in New York began with immense hardship, as he relied on the kindness of strangers like Muhammad, who offered him a place to stay and a job delivering groceries under grueling conditions. When Muhammad left, Deo faced threats and homelessness, even living in Central Park until he fell ill. A chance encounter with Sharon McKenna at a church led to life-changing support, as she introduced him to Nancy and Charlie Wolf, who provided him with shelter and financial aid to pursue education. Despite challenges in obtaining transcripts and passing entrance exams, Deo enrolled at Columbia University in 1995, majoring in biochemistry and philosophy. During this time, he discovered his family in Burundi had survived the violence, and he worked tirelessly to support them while excelling academically. Inspired by a book advocating healthcare for underserved populations, Deo joined Partners In Health, where he met Dr. Paul Farmer, who became a mentor. With permanent residency secured, Deo fulfilled his dream of attending Dartmouth medical school. Returning to Burundi in 2006, he founded a clinic that provided free healthcare to thousands, driven by his unwavering commitment to improving lives despite the immense personal and political challenges he endured.
