On her way to becoming a writer, Stephanie Land overcame many challenges – an abusive relationship, descent into poverty and an exhausting job as a maid and single mother. She is now a freelance writer who has been published in the New York Times, the New York Review of Books, the Washington Post, the Guardian, the Nation and Vox. She’s worked with the author Barbara Ehrenreich, participating in her Economic Hardship Reporting Project.
Stephanie's journey began in Port Townsend, Washington, where she worked tirelessly to save for her dream of moving to Missoula, Montana, to pursue a writing career. However, an unplanned pregnancy with Jamie, a man who later became abusive, derailed her plans. After their daughter Mia was born, Stephanie endured years of financial struggles, unstable housing, and societal stigma as a single mother reliant on welfare. Despite the physical and emotional toll of her work as a maid and the challenges of navigating government assistance programs, Stephanie remained resilient. With guidance from victim advocates and a scholarship for domestic violence survivors, she eventually moved to Missoula, where she found a supportive community and earned a degree in English and creative writing. Her experiences reshaped her values, emphasizing love and human connection over material wealth, as she built a new life for herself and Mia while confronting the cultural biases against poverty and welfare.
