Barbara Sher was a therapist, career counselor, and business owner who has been called “the godmother of life coaching.” Prior to her death in 2020, her career spanned five decades that included many media appearances, a worldwide network of “Sher’s Success Teams,” and seven books, most notable among them the best-seller Wishcraft, and Live the Life You Love, which won the Books for a Better Life Commission’s top motivational book award.
We’ve explored strategies to uncover desires, whether for those who’ve never identified them or for individuals who, despite achieving their goals, find themselves lost again. For the latter, this often arises from major transitions, like job loss or children leaving home, or profound events, such as the end of a career or the loss of a loved one. Both groups must reconnect with their “touchstones” by reflecting on past joys or processing emotions to rebuild purpose. Even amidst grief, it’s possible to make choices and start anew. We also examined those whose outwardly successful lives mask inner discontent, often hindered by societal expectations, inaction, or internal resistance. Overcoming these requires distinguishing personal desires from external pressures, taking small steps toward self-discovery, and addressing internal fears. Jerry’s story illustrates how minor changes, like dedicating time to a passion, can lead to fulfillment. By making small, intentional adjustments, anyone can begin to carve a new, meaningful path forward.
