Buchzusammenfassung
Mirjam Neelen is the Head of Global Learning Design and Learning Sciences in Novartis. She’s worked in various learning design roles over the last 15 years, including stints at Accenture, Google, and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.
Having examined various tools and methods, we now turn to the critical task of selecting the right components for effective learning design. This process can be challenging, as educators must identify strategies that align with desired outcomes. Research has debunked ineffective methods like rote memorization, highlighting, and re-reading, which fail to enhance comprehension or retention. Instead, evidence supports techniques like spaced repetition, which strengthens long-term memory by encouraging periodic recall over time. Educators can implement this by carefully timing assignments to revisit concepts, fostering deeper learning. Beyond strategies, cultivating expert learners is vital. These self-directed individuals organize knowledge systematically, apply effective techniques, and continuously seek growth, benefiting both themselves and their organizations. Supporting this transformation involves collaborative goal-setting, self-assessment tools, and fostering confidence by reframing mistakes as learning opportunities. Encouraging learners to build personal learning networks further enhances their ability to tackle complex challenges through diverse perspectives. Lastly, adopting an evidence-based mindset is essential for evaluating learning materials, avoiding myths like "learning styles," and identifying reliable resources. By combining effective tools, techniques, and components, educators can design impactful learning experiences that inspire lifelong growth.
