Leonard Mlodinow was an American theoretical physicist, mathematician, screenwriter and author, best known for his contributions to physics, particularly in the large N expansion, a technique for approximating the spectra of atoms by considering an infinite-dimensional version of the problem. Beyond his scientific work, he has also written books for a general readership.
The ability to experience emotions has been instrumental in aiding humans to prosper in various environments and situations. However, there are instances where the very emotions that once served our ancestors by allowing them to evade danger or defend themselves can prove problematic in modern times. Persistent anxiety can immobilize a person, hindering them from leaving their home in the morning. Likewise, physically attacking an adversary can result in legal consequences for assault.
However, that should not be used as a justification to disregard our emotions. On the contrary, it serves as a compelling incentive to connect with our emotions and understand the messages they are conveying. We must acknowledge that none of us can attain perfection, but by putting in effort and staying determined, we can enhance our emotional well-being and, consequently, our overall quality of life.
“The first step in battling the illusion of control is to be aware of if. But even then it is difficult, once we think we see a pattern, we do not easily let go of our perception.”
“We all understand that genius doesn’t guarantee success, but it’s seductive to assume that success must come from genius.”
“Successful people in every field are almost universally members of a certain set—the set of people who don’t give up.”
