Buchzusammenfassung
Tara Westover was born in 1986, in Idaho. She received a BA from Brigham Young University and was awarded a Gates Cambridge Scholarship. She completed her PhD in history in 2014 and was also a visiting fellow at Harvard University. Educated is her first book.
By the time Tara turned 19, she gained financial independence through a student-aid loan, enabling her to focus on her education and critically examine her upbringing. In a Psychology 101 class, she encountered the term "bipolar disorder" and recognized its symptoms in her father, Gene, whose paranoia, mood swings, and delusions had shaped their lives. This realization sparked anger as Tara understood the extent of her family’s indoctrination. Amid this, she learned Gene had suffered severe burns in a gas tank explosion but refused medical treatment. Rushing home, Tara found him gravely injured yet miraculously alive by morning. Returning to Trinity College, she embraced her new life as a graduate student, forming friendships and challenging her upbringing by trying coffee and wine. During a trip to Rome, she opened up about her past, gaining confidence in her identity. However, tensions escalated when her sister Audrey revealed their brother Shawn’s abusive behavior. Determined to support Audrey, Tara faced the family’s denial and Gene’s refusal to address the issue, further straining their already fragile relationships.
