Deborah Anne Quibell, Jennifer Leigh Selig and Dennis Patrick Slattery

Creative inspiration arises from diverse sources, including pain, the natural world, and affection, and connecting with this force—the creative urge—is essential to any artistic practice. Ignoring it weakens its presence, while nurturing it strengthens the bond. When the urge resists, as Dennis describes in moments of creative resistance, it offers opportunities for reflection and new perspectives. Conversely, Jennifer’s concept of creative flooding highlights the challenges of being overwhelmed by ideas. Everyone’s approach to managing creativity differs, but all share a connection to the subconscious, a wellspring of profound inventiveness. This innate creativity can be unlocked through affection, whether for a person, the act of creation, or life itself, as seen in Dennis’s return to painting, Deborah’s appreciation for reality, and Jennifer’s transformative near-death experience. Creativity is also a spiritual pursuit, with sacredness found in daily acts or personal narratives, as Deborah and Dennis demonstrate through their unique spiritual journeys. Suffering, too, can awaken creativity, turning pain into meaningful expression, as seen in Dennis’s poetry, Jennifer’s screenplay, and Deborah’s childhood poem. Inspiration, whether from people, places, or nature, fuels creativity in reciprocal ways. Jennifer’s photography sharpens her connection to nature, Dennis finds poetry in a spider’s web, and Deborah learns grace from a sea turtle. These experiences remind us to honor our muses and embrace the interconnectedness of life, allowing creativity to flourish and inspire others.
