Buchzusammenfassung
Katherine Boo is an investigative journalist who focuses on themes of social justice and poverty. In order to research Behind the Beautiful Forevers, she spent over three years in the Annawadi slum. She won the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service in 2000.
Dreams and aspirations persist even in the harsh realities of Annawadi, but minor conflicts can unravel them entirely. The Husain family, relatively well-off in the slum, dreams of escaping to a legal settlement and has even made a down payment on land. However, their plans collapse after a dispute with their envious neighbor, Fatima, escalates when she falsely accuses them of damaging her home. In a fit of rage, Fatima sets herself on fire and later dies due to inadequate medical care. Corruption compounds the tragedy, as hospital staff exploit her family by stealing medication and selling it back to them, while doctors falsify records to evade accountability. Life in the slum is further marred by despair, driving some to suicide. Sanjay, an orphan, ends his life after witnessing a murder and fearing both the killers and the police. Similarly, Meena, a young girl trapped in an abusive household and dreading an arranged marriage, succumbs to hopelessness and takes her own life. These stories underscore the unrelenting struggles and systemic injustices that define life in Annawadi.
