Vātsyāyana was a religious scholar who lived no later than the fourth century CE. He compiled the Kama Sutra in part from even older sources. The translator, Alain Daniélou (1907–94), was a French scholar and musician who spent many years in India and wrote numerous books on Indian religion, history, and philosophy.

The Kama Sutra offers a comprehensive exploration of sexual practices, presenting a wide array of behaviors without passing judgment. It highlights the significance of mutual affection in relationships involving multiple partners and notes that women engaging with several partners was not unusual in certain contexts. While such practices were often deemed uncivilized, they persisted in specific regions and among prostitutes. Masturbation is briefly mentioned, focusing on women in royal harems and acknowledging male masturbation. The text even touches on bestiality, framing it as rare. Despite its explicit content, the Kama Sutra approaches these subjects with a scholarly perspective, offering a vivid glimpse into the diverse sexual customs of its era.
