When we question the purpose of existence, we’re fundamentally exploring the concept of value—what makes life meaningful to us. This sense of meaning often arises from pursuing goals we genuinely find valuable, though perfectionism can distort our perspective by suggesting only extraordinary achievements give life significance. Yet, meaning doesn’t require perfection, nor does it depend on immortality or free will. Even fleeting moments, like the joy of a clean floor or the shade of a tree, hold undeniable value. While some goals may lose their meaning once achieved, others—like raising a child or being a loving partner—offer lasting purpose through ongoing effort. Suffering, too, doesn’t negate life’s meaning; history shows that even in extreme adversity, people find purpose through hope and helping others. Ultimately, life’s meaning is shaped by our ability to recognize value, embrace imperfection, and strive for what matters most to us.
