The Biggest Mistake in Parenting: Which Baumrind Style Should You Avoid?

Parents can significantly impact their children's success throughout their lives. Therefore, it is important for parents to show the right attitudes and behaviors towards their children, which contributes to their children's healthy growth and becoming happy and successful individuals in adulthood. Parenting styles were first systematically studied by clinical and developmental psychologist Diane Baumrind and categorized into four main types. So, do you know which of these four styles you belong to? Let's find out together.

Table of Contents

Authoritarian Parenting

Authoritarian parenting, also known as controlling parenting, is a parenting style characterized by close monitoring of children's actions and the use of strict rules and discipline to guide their behavior.

Authoritarian parents seek to control every aspect of their children's lives and hold extremely high expectations for them.

Open and honest communication is often difficult to establish between controlling parents and their children.

Authoritarian parents expect their children to always be successful in academic, social, and other areas.

Permissive Parenting

Permissive parenting is a style that has been frequently discussed and explored in recent years.

Parents are quite tolerant and permissive towards their children and make very few demands of them. They see good parenting as allowing their children's demands.

They are warm and affectionate towards their children and do not have age-appropriate expectations of them.

Studies show that families who adopt a permissive parenting style struggle to control their children's behavior.

Neglectful Parenting

These parents neglect their children, do not care about them, and want to keep a certain distance from them.

They are unresponsive to their children's needs and expect their children to find solutions on their own.

Studies have shown that children of neglectful parents are more likely to exhibit aggressive tendencies, have lower academic achievement, start using alcohol and tobacco at an early age, and have poor emotional regulation.

Democratic Parenting

It is known that democratic parenting is the healthiest and most effective among parenting styles.

In democratic parenting, similar to authoritarian parenting, parents establish rules and boundaries for their children.

Democratic parents strive to communicate with their children, listen to and consider their thoughts, feelings, and opinions.

Research shows that the democratic parenting style has positive effects on children's development.

Discover Which Parenting Style Suits You!

Parenting styles have a significant impact on children's development and psychological well-being. Parents' attitudes and behaviors towards their children play a major role in shaping their children's personalities and character. The four parenting styles identified by clinical and developmental psychologist Diana Baumrind provide a framework for parents to evaluate their own approaches and establish healthier and more effective relationships with their children.

Especially democratic parenting fosters positive outcomes in children's emotional and social development, while other styles may have various effects as well. Parents reviewing their own styles and adopting methods that better meet their children's needs, contributing to their healthy development as individuals, is crucial for both children's and the family's overall happiness. This evaluation process can help parents improve themselves and build strong, trust-based relationships with their children.
